Receipt Scanning Problems

If your receipt scan isn't working or extracted data looks wrong, here are common causes and fixes.

Blurry or unreadable receipt

Cause: The photo is too blurry, dark, or low-resolution for AI to read.

Fixes:

  • Use good lighting — natural light works best
  • Place the receipt on a flat, contrasting surface
  • Hold your phone steady or use the camera's auto-focus
  • Crop the image to just the receipt area
  • Avoid shadows across the text

Wrong amounts or merchant name

Cause: The AI misread parts of the receipt.

Fixes:

  • Tap the receipt card to open the detail view
  • Edit the merchant name, amount, date, or tax directly
  • Your corrections are saved and help improve future scans via merchant memory

"File type not supported"

Cause: The image format isn't accepted.

Fixes:

  • GigBooks accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, and single-page PDF files
  • Screenshots and HEIC files may need to be converted to JPEG or PNG first
  • Check that the file extension matches the actual format

"Image too large"

Cause: The file exceeds the 10MB upload limit.

Fixes:

  • GigBooks compresses images automatically, but the raw file must be under 10MB
  • Use your phone's camera settings to reduce photo resolution
  • Or resize the image before uploading

"Scan limit reached"

Cause: You've hit your plan's receipt scanning limit.

Fixes:

  • Free plan: 3 scans lifetime — upgrade to Pro for unlimited scanning
  • Pro plan: Unlimited scans
  • Max / Tax Season Pass: Unlimited scans

Receipt not auto-promoting

Cause: The AI confidence wasn't high enough for automatic transaction creation.

Fix: This is expected for receipts with medium or low confidence. Tap the receipt, review the extracted data, make any corrections, and tap "Save as Transaction" to manually promote it.
