GigBooks

Our Story

GigBooks started out of necessity, not ambition.

I've been a freelance video editor for over 25 years. I built a career in storytelling, shaping narratives, working long hours, and wearing every hat that comes with being self-employed. Like so many freelancers, I incorporated, took on the responsibility of managing my own taxes, and told myself I would stay on top of it all.

But the truth is, it's a lot.

Not because the work is hard, but because it's not your work.

Tracking expenses, organizing statements, categorizing everything properly for the CRA is a separate job layered on top of the one you actually care about. And when deadlines pile up or life gets busy, it's the easiest thing to fall behind on. I've been there more than once.

I like numbers. I understand them. But I'm not an accountant. I'm a storyteller.

And that's the reality for most people working for themselves.

Across Canada, there are hundreds of thousands of freelancers and gig workers. Editors, designers, tradespeople, consultants, delivery drivers, rideshare drivers, photographers, creators. People who are great at what they do, but are also expected to manage the business side on their own. Not because they chose to be accountants, but because they have to be.

GigBooks was built for that reality.

As technology has evolved, it's become clear that the way we handle our finances doesn't have to stay stuck in spreadsheets and manual sorting. The same systems that help us work faster and smarter in our professions can also take care of the repetitive, time-consuming parts of managing expenses.

For me, that meant building something that could take a pile of transactions and turn it into something organized, structured, and aligned with CRA categories without hours of manual effort.

It also meant building it in a way that I'd trust myself.

Financial data is personal. It's sensitive. It's not something you should have to hand over without knowing how it's being handled. GigBooks was designed with that in mind from the beginning, with a focus on privacy, minimal data exposure, and giving you control over your own information.

Because if I wouldn't feel comfortable uploading my own statements, then there's no reason anyone else should.

But GigBooks isn't really about software.

It's about giving people a bit of their time back.

It's about removing a layer of stress that sits in the background of freelance life.

It's about helping people stay focused on the work they actually chose to do.

Because most of us didn't get into this to manage expense reports. We got into it to build something, create something, or earn a living on our own terms.

GigBooks exists to support that.

Thank you for supporting GigBooks. It means a lot to know this is helping people like you.
